Safed, Golan Heights and the Druz Communities

I am finally getting some downtime to catch up on blog posts of my trip to Israel. On Wednesday we started out driving to Safed, the ancient center of Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah. It is considered one of the four holy cities of Judaism. We visited a Sephardic synagogue which housed some ancient Torah scrolls.

Safed is my favorite place in Israel so far. We visited the Jewish quarter and artist quarter with gorgeous Judaica, arts and crafts and jewelry.

From Safed we descended to the valley and went to the Noat sandal factory (where they make Teva sandals, etc) and then to the Golan Heights, once a stronghold of Syria. We could see Syria from the top of the Golan and drove to the border at Kunitra. We had lunch in a Druz village and finished the day at an abandoned bunker at the Golan.

Then back to the Kibbutz on the Sea of Galilee for some free time and dinner.
I will post more later. It is time to get ready for Shabbat here in Jerusalem!

Thanks for coming by!
