Penny Black Butterfly Die

I made this card for two challenges. The SCS Inspiration Challenge was to find inspiration from the Etsy store The Wildlands. I chose the butterfly painting. I also created this for the Penny Black Saturday challenge - Anything Goes.  I used the negative space of the Penny Black Butterfly die cut mask on the card front and watercolored it with Koi watercolors. After removing the mask I used the watercolors to create splatters. I happened to have a plaid background left over from a class and the colors looked good so I used that as an accent. I added rhinestones for a bit of texture.

Lucky Stars - Faux Textured Metal Paper

Tonight I saw a new to me technique from Jennifer McGuire.  She called it Faux Textured Metal Paper.  Here is the link to her blog and video.  I won't step through how I did this so check it out on Jennifer's blog.  It is super easy and quick and the possibilities are endless!  Since the SCS CAS challenge tonight was "under the stars" I used my star embossing folder for this card.  I also used Pearl Ex instead of Perfect Pearls since I had that powder in gold.  The sentiment is from Hero Arts.  This is a one layered card plus the sentiment banner.

You are Simply the Best!

I had a chance to get some freezer paper this weekend so I was able to do my Online Card Class - Mask-erade Day 4 homework.  I love how this came out and that's a good thing because the size of the roll of paper will last me several lifetimes!!!  I used distress inks and used the wet on wet watercolor technique to color over and around the butterfly mask.  The butterfly mask was cut with a PaperTrey die.  The sentiment is from Technique Tuesday.

This is the second card for day 2 of the Online Card Class Mask-erade, using the technique that Jennifer McGuire taught.  This is using the positive die cut "love" for a mask.  It is hard to see in the photo but I adhered a thin black line of card stock down the left side of the card front.

This card is part of my homework from the Mask-erade class day 2.  This is from a lesson that Jennifer McGuire taught.  This card is using the negative of the die cut word "love". This wasn't a great die to use for this assignment but it was the best one I had.

My next post will have the card made with the use of the positive die cut used as a mask.

Today is my turn to host the Addicted to CAS Challenge #57.  I chose the Code Word MASK:

I thought this word would provide different interpretations such as a stamping technique, a mask as an object, etc.

I used masking tape to make the "frame" around the top and left side of the balloons, then I stamped them so that some parts were masked off.  I also made a mask for the balloon so I could over-stamp two more balloons.  I then stamped the sentiment with some words from the Winnie & Walter set The Big, The Bold, The Happy.  The balloons were colored with Copic markers and then I drew the strings with a Copic Multiliner pen and a ruler.

Here is another card that I used masking for - it is my favorite masking technique actually:

For this card I used a sheet of Eclipse masking paper and die cut the Cuttlebug Butterfly.  I then place the masking paper with the negative space onto the card front and sponged on some inks.  Then, keeping the mask in place, I stamped the bullrushes from a Verve set and the dragonfly from a PaperTrey set.  After removing the mask I stamped the sentiment.

Third post for today...

The second masked frame technique that Jennifer taught today in class was using a stencil over the negative space and a die cut mask.  I used some Washi paper the size of the card front and used my largest SB rectangle die to create the large negative space.  I used my SB Scalloped Heart Nestability to make the heart shape and used the positive inside the rectangle.  I taped the card down to my work space and then taped the Heidi Swapp stencil over the card front.  I used my blending tool to apply Hero Arts Soft Cantaloupe Shadow ink and Certainly Celery dye ink.  When done I removed the heart mask and the frame mask and stamped the sentiment from Winnie & Walter in Hero Arts Charcoal Shadow ink.

This is my second post for today...

In today's Online Card Class - CAS 3 Jennifer showed us three ways to make one layered cards with masked frames.  This is the first way - using a background stamp, embossing it with white embssing powder and coloring the open space with Distress markers.  I don't have many background stamps nor do I have many frame dies so I was a bit limited for this one.  The inside die was a speech bubble - it looks like my frame mask is torn but it really isn't.  The frame die I used is from MFT.  The sentiment is from Stamps of Life.

I will now go back and do some more homework!

Today's subject in the Online Card Class - CAS3 is optical illusions.  One technique is masking, one of my favorite techniques to use on a one layer card.  Another technique is layered stamping.  My card here uses both techniques.  I die cut a mask with a Memory Box butterfly and using the negative space I sponged on the green and blue inks.  While the mask was still on I stamped the leaves.  After removing the mask I stamped the sentiment.  Quick and easy and I love the results.
